HTML version: [Get member emergency contacts](https://support.gladstonesoftware.cloud/reference/members/get-member-emergency-contacts)

## Overview

Retrieves the people to ring if something happens to a member at a site. A member can have any number of emergency contacts, or none.

The contacts are wrapped in an object with a single `emergencyContacts` array — the response is not a bare array, so read `response.emergencyContacts` rather than iterating the body.

A member with no contacts recorded returns `200` with an empty `emergencyContacts` array. A member id that does not exist returns `404`, so the two cases are distinguishable. Unlike most favourites and personalisation endpoints, this one **does** allow linked members: a primary member's token can read the emergency contacts of a member linked to them.

This is health and safety data about a named individual. Treat it as sensitive and only fetch it when you have a reason to.

## Endpoint

`GET {base_url}/api/members/{memberId}/emergency-contacts`

`{base_url}` is the environment URL issued to your integration. See [Authenticating with Gladstone APIs](../../guides/authenticating-with-gladstone-apis.md).

## Path parameters

| Name | Type | Required | Description |
|------|------|----------|-------------|
| `memberId` | integer (int32) | Yes | The member whose emergency contacts you want. Must be greater than `0` — `0` (the non-member record) and `-999` (a purged member) are rejected with `400`, not `404`. With a member-scoped token this may be the token's own member or a member linked to them. |

## Sample request

```bash title="cURL"
curl -X GET '{base_url}/api/members/{memberId}/emergency-contacts' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer {accessToken}' \
  -H 'X-Use-SSO: true'
```

## Response fields

| Field | Type | Description |
|-------|------|-------------|
| `emergencyContacts` | array of object | Every emergency contact held against the member, in no guaranteed order and with no priority ranking — the platform does not mark one as the primary contact, so if that matters to you, decide it yourself. Empty when the member has none. |
| `emergencyContacts[].id` | integer (int32) | The contact record's own id. Use it to address the contact when updating or deleting it. It is not a member id: an emergency contact is free text and is not required to be a member of the centre. |
| `emergencyContacts[].contactName` | string | The contact's name as staff typed it — a single free-text field, not split into first and last name. |
| `emergencyContacts[].contactNumber` | string | The telephone number to ring, exactly as entered. It is not normalised, validated or formatted by the platform, so expect spaces, country codes and local formats to vary, and do not assume it is dialable without cleaning. |
| `emergencyContacts[].relationship` | string | How the contact relates to the member, such as `Mother` or `Partner`. Free text set by staff, not a code from a fixed list, so do not switch on its value. May be empty when nobody filled it in. |

## Sample response

```json title="200 OK"
{
  "emergencyContacts": [
    {
      "id": 12345,
      "contactName": "string",
      "contactNumber": "string",
      "relationship": "string"
    }
  ]
}
```

## Errors

| Status | Meaning | When |
|--------|---------|------|
| `400` | Bad request | `memberId` is `0` or negative — including the non-member record `0` and purged members, which are `-999`. The body is `{memberId} is an invalid member ID`. |
| `403` | Forbidden | The token belongs to a member who is neither `memberId` nor linked to them. The body is `The given member ID of {memberId} does not belong to the logged in member nor any linked members`. |
| `404` | Not found | `memberId` is a positive id that does not exist. The body is the plain-text `MemberId does not exist`. A member who exists but has no contacts returns `200` with an empty array instead. |
| `500` | Internal server error | An unexpected server-side failure while reading the contacts. |
