# Delete cost centre

## Overview

Removes a cost centre. It is permanently deleted: there is no active or deleted flag on a cost centre, and so no deactivate alternative — to reinstate one you create it again with [Create cost centre](create-cost-centre.md).

The call refuses while any department still belongs to the cost centre. It checks for linked departments before deleting anything and returns `409 Conflict` with `Centre {id} has existing departments linked to it and cannot be deleted`. Move each department to another cost centre with [Update department](update-department.md), or delete them with [Delete department](delete-department.md), then retry.

One trap: a cost centre that Gladstone supplies as system default data for the tenant's language and country cannot be removed. For those cost centres the call still returns `204`, but the cost centre is immediately put back — read it back with [Retrieve cost centre](get-cost-centre-by-id.md) if you need to be sure it has gone.

A successful call returns `204 No Content` with an empty body, and the change shows immediately in the tenant's cost centre list. Repeating it returns `404` with an empty body.

| `id` | string | Yes | The cost centre's identifier, as returned in `[].id` by [List cost centres](get-all-cost-centres.md). Up to 15 characters. Ids Gladstone generated begin with the prefix `CCTR`; ids supplied at create time can be anything within that length. |

## Errors

| Status | Meaning | When |
|--------|---------|------|
| `404` | Not found | No cost centre holds that id — it never existed, or an earlier call already deleted it. The body is empty. |
| `409` | Conflict | One or more departments are still linked to the cost centre — `Centre {id} has existing departments linked to it and cannot be deleted`. Nothing is deleted. Reassign or delete the departments first. |
| `500` | Internal server error | The delete failed on the server. Nothing is removed, and the request is safe to retry. |
