Using Audience Builder
How to use the Audience Builder to create custom audiences.
Please note that this is a paid feature which must be enabled before it can be used. If you have not enabled audience builder, please talk to your account manager before continuing.
Creating an audience
Log into Go as staff,
- Go to Automation Portal > Audiences.
- Select Create New Audience.
- Enter a name and type and click Next.
- If Operational, the audience will be used for administrative communications which don’t require opt-in.
- If Marketing, select marketing subscription(s) associated with this audience. The people will have had to opt-into the selected subscription(s) to be included in the audience. You can also add a new subscription at this point. See more information in this help article.
- Add filters along the left-side and click Submit. See more on Filters below.
- If needed, adjust your filters and submit until you are happy with the results.
- Click Save to save the audience and leave.
Please note that audience samples are generated as a snapshot in time and will update every time a communication sends to the audience. Therefore, the current contacts shown in the audience may differ from who receives the communications (depending on your filters). It also means that you may get no results when creating the audience but will have results when the communication is sent.
You may get some duplicate members appearing in your audience. This will be because they have multiple records which meet the filters, e.g. multiple bookings in the next day. When sending the communication job, the duplicates will be filtered out and only one message will send per member ID.
How to use filters
For a full list of filters and some example audiences, check out this article.
Configuring filters
Filters are separated into 3 categories:
- Contacts – Information about contact’s profile, demographics, and status.
- Memberships – Information about a current or former member’s memberships.
- Activity – Information about a contact’s bookings and on-site activity.
A contact needs to meet the criteria of any categories which have filters applied to be included in the audience.
Example
The member needs to have the Current Members status AND have a membership ending within 1 week to be included in the audience.
You do not need to use filters in all 3 categories to create an audience.
Adding filters
To start adding filters:
- Open a category accordion. The option to add a filter will be displayed.
- Select a filter from the dropdown.
- Select a condition. The options will be based on the filter selected.
- Select or enter a value based on the condition.
- Select the And or Or option to add another filter. See below for more information on grouping filters.
- Once you have entered all required filters, click Submit to generate an audience.
Grouping filters
Filters are grouped and separated using the AND/OR options.
Filters linked by an AND must all be met for a contact to be included in the audience.
Multiple groups or individual filters can be separated by ORs. A contact only needs to meet the criteria of one of these groups or individual filters to be included in the audience.
Please note that each filter looks at the data individually, this is especially relevant for membership filters, e.g. if you have filters for membership status is Active and membership type is X, the member will still match if they have two memberships, one is active, and the other is X and expired.
Example
A member will be included in the audience if they have a post code starting with N20 and a Current Member status OR their home address region is Barnet, and they have a Current Member status.
Additional audience builder features
Column filter
You can use the column filter to change the details of the members shown in the audience sample.
Any columns available in this list will populate data in the email/SMS placeholders.
Export full audience
You can export your full audience, at the current time, to CSV file either from the audience builder page, or the list of audiences.
This will include all members who currently match the filters, and all of the data available for them based on the selected filters, e.g. membership data if you have selected a membership filter.
Clone audience
Cloning an audience creates a copy of the audience with the same type and filters applied. This allows you to quickly create a new audience with slight tweaks to the filters of an existing audience, e.g. different audiences for different types of memberships purchased.
