Setting Up and Naming Gladstone 360 Hardware Services
Problem
Sites need to install, name and select the Gladstone 360 hardware service on each PC so that browser sessions reach the right cash drawer, printer, card reader and other devices.
Resolution
The hardware service is a small local program that links a browser session on a PC to that PC's devices (cash drawer, receipt printer, card reader/PED, webcam, card scanner, gate).
Install and select a service
Install the service locally
- Install the hardware service locally on each PC that takes payments or uses hardware. Local installs cause fewer conflicts than one image pushed centrally to many PCs.
- Give it its approved name during installation (see Naming in Notes).
Choose the active site
- In 360, choose the active site.
Select the hardware service
- Select the hardware service for that PC.
Select the till
- Select the till. Set Site, Current site, Receipt layout and Point of sale till to the same site.
Save and check the connection
- Save and check the connection indicator (bell) is active.
Test every device
- Test every connected device (printer, drawer, scanner, webcam, PED, gate).
Rename an unclear service
Confirm the hardware
- Confirm the physical PC and every device attached to it.
Remove the obsolete entry
- Remove the obsolete service entry.
Remove the old files
- Remove the old installer or configuration (text) file from the PC.
Reinstall with a descriptive name
- Reinstall the service locally with the new descriptive name.
Reconnect and retest
- Reconnect the devices and retest.
Notes
- A hardware service belongs to the PC, not the user. Once chosen on a PC, it's remembered for everyone who logs in there (until the browser cache is cleared). Two PCs using the same hardware service keep taking the connection from each other.
- Naming: name each service at installation for its physical purpose, not its computer name. Recommended format:
[LOCATION] - [WORKSTATION] - [PURPOSE], for exampleMain Desk - PC01 - ReceptionorCafe - PC02 - Till. If IT installs them with default computer names (for example "PC-8CC…"), staff won't know which to pick. - Ask IT to install a test hardware service on reception PCs so staff can practise in the test environment, and one per admin laptop plus spares for test.
- Changing the selected hardware service affects transaction routing and cash-up. Restrict Edit PC Settings once the site is stable.
- SignalR Hub Url and Enable load balancing of SignalR Hub (
GMC > Gladstone360 CheckIn POS > General Settings) let the hardware service be load-balanced and deployed per site rather than centrally. Gladstone sets these at installation; the URL is empty by default. - Day-to-day behaviour (the bell icon, Go to, conflicts between PCs) is covered in Logging In to Gladstone 360 and Using the Hardware Service.
