# Configuring Membership Discounts in the GMC

## Problem
You need to set up a membership discount that Gladstone 360 applies automatically when staff sell a membership in a workflow, without typing a code, and that Operator promotion codes can use for online joining on Go.

## Resolution

1. **Open the subscription's discounts**
   - In the GMC, go to `Configuration Manager > Configuration > Gladstone360 Front of House` > **Subscription Types** tab.
   - Find the subscription and click the edit icon (far right). Scroll to the **Discounts** table.

2. **Add a discount**
   - Click **New Discount**. **Application ID** defaults to *Gladstone360 Front of House*; other applications (for example online joining) can be added.

3. **Complete the fields**

   | Field | Meaning |
   |---|---|
   | **Site** | Sites that get the discount |
   | **Subscription start date** | Forces the start date to this date or later (pre-sales) |
   | **Discount applies from / to** | Applies if the discount is active and the membership start date falls between these dates. This date range affects **360** sales. The online date range is set on the Operator promotion code |
   | **Regular discount of** | Discount on the ongoing (recurring) payments: an amount, a percentage or a fixed member price |
   | **Applies for** / **Perpetual** | How long the regular discount lasts, or permanently |
   | **Introductory discount** | Discount on the first payment (the pro-rata fee and one-off products) |
   | **Apply single discount to every one-off product** | One discount on all one-off products (for example the joining fee). Doesn't affect the pro-rata price |
   | **Apply discounts to individual one-off products** | Separate discounts on chosen one-off products |
   | **Round to Nearest** | Rounding for percentage discounts |
   | **Discount banner** / **Discount text** | Shown in bold (banner) and beneath it when the membership is added in a 360 workflow |
   | **Reason**, **2nd Language Discount Text** | Online joining only; not used by 360 |
   | **Status** | Must be **Active** to apply |

4. **Activate and save**
   - Set **Status** to **Active** and save.

5. **Create the promotion code in Operator (if applicable)**
   - Continue in Operator: `Configuration > Centre Management > Promotion Codes`. See [Promo Codes (Discounts on Memberships)](../gooperator/promo-codes-discounts-on-memberships.md), which also covers the discount types.

## Notes

- **Overlapping discounts**: if several discounts on one subscription have overlapping dates, only the first is applied.
- **Old discounts**: discounts from a previous online joining system can be set **inactive**.
- **In 360**: an active discount is applied **automatically** when staff sell the membership with a start date in range. Staff type no code and see the banner and text. Otherwise, only **one-off fees** can be discounted at the desk (**Apply Membership Discounts (one-off fees only)**). Membership fees can't be discounted in the basket; this is controlled by the *one-off fee* tick on the subscription's fees in Plus2.
- **On Go**: Operator **promotion codes** can only use GMC discounts that are **active**, **percentage based** and of type **Regular** or **One-off** (not pro-rata, and not individual one-off product discounts). Unsupported discounts show greyed out in Operator. If a discount later becomes inactive, it's highlighted on the code and must be removed.
- **Where codes work**: promo codes work on Go and 360, not Plus2. A percentage applies to whatever the pro-rata amount is, so late joiners get a smaller saving in pounds.
- **Emails**: the **Discount ending soon** email warns customers before a discounted DD returns to full price.
